Good News!

Luke was just seen by both Dr. Iantosca, the pediatric neurosurgeon who performed the surgery, and the Physical Therapist and Occupational Therapist. Dr. Iantosca removed Luke's dressing so we have gotten to see his incision for the first time. Dr. was pleased, Luke has some mild swelling that he said was less than what would typically be seen but that it will get larger and smaller as he sits up and lies down. He explained that as long as the swelling is soft not to worry. He should keep an ace wrap on his head to decrease the amount of days that the swelling will occur. Hydrocephalus (increase in fluid on the brain) is still a concern so we need to watch for signs of that occurring. He had Luke sit up and nod his head yes and no and said that he is moving much better than most kids and way better than any adult who has the surgery. He told us that we can go home today if we want to. Physical and Occupation Therapy had him walk down the hall and up and down a flight of stairs. This wiped him out-he was sleeping before the walk and is knocked out after. He did very well, but is not walking normally. His balance is off, which is not surprising after this type of surgery. They have recommended outpatient Physical Therapy and felt that he was doing well enough that he wouldn't require staying here longer for inpatient therapy. We have decided to wait until after lunch to see how Luke is before we decide to tackle the drive home. He has not had any IV pain medicine since last evening, which is a good sign that his painis improving and may be controllable with just tylenol.
If anyone is familiar with an outpatient therapy setting that is used to working with children please let us know. We will need to make these arrangements when we get home.
So far so good for today! We will keep updating as we can.

Hi Rhonda,
George (pharmacist on duty today) suggested HealthSouth because of the nature of his surgery and physical therapy needs. George is a regular pharmacist at healthsouth and says they specialize in spinal cord injuries therapy and therapy of Lukes's nature in people of all ages. He says they have pediatric patients all the time as well as adults and if it was his kid that would be the first place he would check to see if they can do something on an outpatient basis.

Great news that Lukey is doing so well! We are praying that he is well enough to be discharged today. I'm sure he will do well once he is back in familiar surroundings. We'll give you a call to see what we can do to help out. Adam can mow and do any outside work, we can tackle any inside work as well. I know we'll be lining up some meals for you. We'll see you back in Martinsburg!!

Health south is good but that depends on which one you go to they tend to have different people at different places I went to them at Tyrone and walked out during the treatment they were bad I even asked to see her licence. the one I really liked was crossroads and they have one in Duncansville and they go out to Roaring Springs last I heard they are the same people at both. I would ask for Tim Parnell but Kristine is good too. this is just my opinion only ok the one in Dun is mostly glass walls so you feel as if your outside

I am really glad Luke is doing so well as reene' says the force is with him, thank God!!!!
love auntie carole your favorite

Whaahooooo!! That's great news! I'm not surprised that he is doing better than expected after watching him at the soccer tournament. He didn't care how big the other kid was, he was right in there. True sign of a fighter!! Congratulations Lukey!!
Well done!! :o)

My nephew went to HealthSouth after he had hip surgery. He has also had therapy at Easter Seals. Scott Weaver works there now. He used to work at HealthSouth. When he was at HealthSouth, my father-in-law, sister-in-law, my daughter, and I all had him. He is great with kids. Taylor was 5 at the time and she loved him. He did all kinds of neat, kid-friendly therapy with her. Any questions or anything we can do, give us a call.

Have a safe trip home!
